Neopyrenochaeta
Neopyrenochaeta Valenzuela-Lopez et al. Stud. Mycol. 90: 54 (2017)
Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi number, MycoBank, GenBank Fig 1
Classification: Neopyrenochaetaceae, Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes, Ascomycota, Fungi
Pathogenic or saprobic on Pinaceae. The sexual morph is undetermined. The asexual morph is characterised by the semi-immersed to superficial pycnidial conidiomata, which are pale brown to brown, unilocular, setose, separate, globose to subglobose, and ostiolate. The ostiole is papillate or non-papillate, circular and located in the center or beside. Setae are apex paler, base pale brown to black, conspicuous or inconspicuous, septate and unbranched. The pycnidial wall is comprised of textura angularis to textura prismatica, thick-walled and brown to hyaline cells. Conidiophores are reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells are enteroblastic, annellidic or phialidic, determinate or indeterminate, doliiform to ampulliform or lageniform, hyaline and smooth-walled. Conidia are hyaline, thin and smooth-walled, ovoid to ellipsoidal or subcylindrical, guttulate and aseptate (Valenzuela-Lopez et al. 2018, Li et al. 2020).
Type species: Neopyrenochaeta acicola (Moug. & Lév.) Valenzuela-Lopez et al. Stud. Mycol. 90: 54 (2017)
= Vermicularia acicola Moug. & Lév., Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 3 9: 259 (1848)
Notes: Neopyrenochaeta was introduced by Valenzuela-Lopez et al. (2018) based on N. acicola as the type species. In that study, Neopyrenochaetaceae was established to accommodate this genus Neopyrenochaeta and introduced four species of Neopyrenochaeta (N. acicola, N. fragariae, N. inforescentiae and N. telephoni). Li et al. (2020) introduced three new species (N. annellidica, N. chiangraiensis and N. maesuayensis), which are isolated from submerged decaying wood in freshwater streams. Magana-Duenas et al. (2021) reported three new species (N. asexualis, N. submersa and N. glabra) which are found in plant debris in freshwater. Phylogenetically, four loci ITS, LSU, tub2, and rpb2 are used for the identification of Neopyrenochaeta. Currently, there are 15 species listed in Neopyrenochaeta in Species Fungorum (September 2024). There are more than 200 sequence data available for Neopyrenochaeta in GenBank (September 2024). The updated taxonomic treatment of this genus is Neopyrenochaetaceae, in Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes) (Wijayawardene et al. 2022, Hyde et al. 2024).
For all accepted species: see Species Fungorum, and search Neopyrenochaeta.
